Hands up who loves Stylist Magazine? Well Stylist Live brings everything in the magazine to life all over three days of experts, interviews, comedy, food, beauty and fashion exclusives. There is so much to see and do and there is something for everyone. I went for 2 days and I am now officially exhausted but exhilarated and inspired to do so many things. So here's a little peek of of what I did.
The recurrent tip throughout and something they all did was to get up early. It is not rocket science and e all know it. However if you are not a morning person (i.e me) waking up early can be torture. I will do anything or an extra hour in bed and live for the weekend when I can sleep in. They all said this was their quiet time and got so much done in this time that it was worth it. I have to say, I will just take their word for it. Jasmine Hemsley described the importance o meditating to maintain balance in her lie. '20 minutes meditation is worth 3 hours sleep'. Really, if so, I really need to start meditating. She said she meditated on the train or in a taxi so does not have to be at home. So this makes it a little more achievable. Jasmine also talked about scraping your tongue. It helps with bad breath and is a good indicator of health as when she has been out the night before she can tell and see the effects which I felt was quite interesting. One of the most important things to a successful morning routine is a good nighttime routine. Anything you can prepare the day before, do it. From making your lunch, to a good nightcream, to packing your handbag to selecting your outfit so everything is ready. These are all little things that will save you precious time in the morning.
One of my favourite talks of the whole event was 'Put Down Your Phone and flirt; The lost art of human connection' with Jean Smith, Flirtologist. Are you tired of getting nowhere with the army of dating apps available? I know I am. I have tried them all and got nowhere. Jean asked 'why do keep turning to our phones instead of each other?' Because a digital rebuff is easier than face-to-face rejection. You want to meet someone, start with conversation with someone, smile at the hot guy on the tube, ask someone in the coffee shops what they recommend, anything, just start somewhere. Here's the thing, its hard to put yourself out there. But Jean said 'Rejection is your friend'. Rejection is a weeding out tool. He said no, no problem, he's not right for you, NEXT!! Ah, lightbulb moment. No one born a bad flirt, it takes practice. So yes, the first guy you chat says no, ok but the next guy might say yes and he might be your Prince Charming. What have you got to lose? What have you got to gain? You know what this talk, the practical tips. the things you can actually use to start that conversation with Prince Charming. You will quickly know if he is interested or not (short answers, no eye contact etc, just move on)
- Q. That's an interesting rink. what drink is that?
- Q. You look good in a dilemma. what should I drink?
- Q. Do you know anything about......? Can be anything
- Q. Do you know about Italy (or whichever country you are holidaying in next)
- Q. So what do you think about this piece of art?
Go get him girl!!. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.
I went to the talk on 'Game Changers: the beauty products every women needs in 2018' with Alexia Inge, Founder of Cult Beauty. She discussed the latest products to hit the market and here's a few to look out for.
1. MV Organic 9 Oil Cleanser - Alexia called this 'fertiliser for the skin'. Australian skincare brand loved by Alicia Keys and Emma Watson. There is a big movement towards going makeup free spearheaded by Alicia Keys herself and this reportedly keeps her skin in tiptop condition. Reviewers say it is more of second cleanser than a makeup remove but leaves skin feeling supple and clears up spots so one to watch out for! £60

2. Oskia CityLife Booster fights pollution and anti-aging. Living in a major city like London does havoc to your skin so it is important to protect your skin and fight against it. I have tried other products from Oskia which have worked beautifully but it is very expensive at £110. This is down to a special ingredient it has called EUK 134 which is self regenerating and helps to guard the skin acting like a shield.
3. Staying with the no makeup look, Alexia recommends Jouer Luminizing Moisture Tint. It is a very light foundation that gives the skin a beautiful glow and lets your natural skin show through. It is your skin but better, not the polished, super smooth Instagram look. Alexia says this 'frees the freckle' and I love a good freckle.
And that was Day 1 for me complete. After so much walking, let me tell you I slept like a baby that night, waking up early refreshed for Day 2, I went straight to the talk with Kikki.K founder, Kristina Karlsson. I love to write things down. In this digital age, it feels lovely to put pen to paper sometimes. I plan everything in my planner and I just would not be without it. granted my planner is not from Kikki.K, it is from Personal-planner as i like to customize everything but the principles are the same.
Kristina talk about the importance of writing things down when you wake up as it clears your head, gets everything out of head and ready or the day ahead. Personally, I don't think I could do it in the morning, I like to plan in the evening so it is just whatever works for you. If you have a goal in life, no matter ho big, break it down into manageable tasks. Use your journal to keep track of your tasks and when you need to do them.
The most inspiring, honest and heartbreaking talk was 'The Stylist Book of Life Lessons.' Next year Stylist will release their debut book Life Lessons from Remarkable Women: Tales of Triumph, Failure and Learning to Love Yourself which includes 25 essays from the likes of actress Romola Garai, award-winning journalist Christina Lamb OBE and beauty entrepreneur Bobbi Brown and more. I was lucky enough to hear from a trio of the book’s contributors – award-winning journalist and author Poorna Bell, comedian Francesca Martinez and author Laura Jane Williams - as they read excerpts from their essays on subjects including rejecting normality and the art of loving yourself. Laura says 'It is nobody's job to give you permission to love yourself or want what you want'. 'Self love is not a privilege, it's a right'. Poorna Bell talked about the grief of losing her husband through suicide and why does it take losing something or someone for us to start living? Francesca Martinez has cerebral palsy and described the difficulties she had fitting in as child and her struggle to be normal only to find out everyone has issues and no one is normal. I can really relate to her want to be normal and fit in and I had to fight to hold back the tears at the end.
A popular talk was 'Shop like a Fashion insider: the 2018 wishlist. So what are trends you ask? Here are the trends for Spring and Summer 2018, enjoy!
Pastels
Trench vs Anorak ( a Mac never goes out of fashion)
Floral Delight
Denim Duo (AKA the Canadian Tuxedo)
Little White Dress (for summertime)
Other trends were
- Sheer (have to be brave to do sheer)
- Sequins (you can absolutely do sequins in the daytime- knitted jumper and sequin skirt. done)
- 80s
Trend on Trial Live brought the magazine to life as a regular reader of the column of the magazine. Lisa Potter-Dixon and Caroline Barnes rated their favourite looks and discussed how to make the catwalk looks more daytime-friendly.
First up as the Smoky Eye - so amazing but hard to master. Practice makes perfect. Experiment.
Pink Blush - this probably goes well with the 80's revival on the fashion side. Blusher should be the hot pink that really pops.
One of the busiest talks was Tinder Burnout with Alix Fox and Hilda Burke. with so many dating apps out there, it is really saturated. You would think it is easy to meet someone, just swipe right, right? Nope. Ever been ghosted? Its not nice. It is when someone just disappears on you like a ghost. You are left thinking what the hell? Alix Fox said it is important to think about how active towards dating you think you are versus how active you really are? Are you really doing everything you can to meet someone? Are you at home on a Friday or Saturday night? Have a conversation with someone and you never know. One workshop I went to a long time ago said what if the perfect guy for you is best friends with the guy you just told to get lost? Just be honest and say I am not interested in that way but lets be friends and you have expanded your network. Instead o ghosting someone on an app, tell them 'it's not going to work out but I like (something they said or did) and you should do that next time. That gives them constructive and honest feedback. They will thank you for it.
Finally, So how to holiday like a pro? Tamara Heber-Percy, co-founder of the fabulous travel booking site Mr & Mrs Smith, has the answers.
- Go to ski resorts in summer. Err ski in the summer? Why? Because there are lots of activities and it is cheaper bein off-peak season. Activities can include white-water rafting, biking, hiking to name a few.
- book hotels in October and November as hotels want to get their bookings for the summer of next year before year end. You will not find the best deals in January being travel booking peak season. Nobody is thinking about net summer in October or November but that is exactly when you should be booking. so get ready, set go!
- Tell the airline and hotel i it is special occasion, honeymoon, birthday, anniversary etc. It is is not a guarantee but airlines will try to please you and i they have space, you may well get an upgrade. They will not upgrade you unless they know.
- For frequent fliers to USA, sign up or TSA Pre Check. I believe it costs $100 but you are whisked straight through immigration. After a 9-12 hour flight do you really want to waste time with immigration?
So that was all my talks. I got so much information, my brain is still working through it and I feel I need to process through it all and put some o it into action like planning or my goals and putting myself out there and talking to people (gulp).
Here is a little peek at what I picked up.
The necklace is from Ottoman hands and is everything! I just love it. I am a little obsessed with Ottoman Hands having a number of their pieces. The Paper over's book from Kikki.K, perfect to help me with wrapping Christmas presents. A beautiful rose gold pen to start writing with from Kikki.K. Mind,Body Balance book from Annie Clarke - full of interesting recipes and cannot wait to put some into action. Delicious! The cutest pineapple earrings from Rachel Jackson.
There were so many pop-ups with beautiful items but funds are limited so had to be very strict with myself. Some feedback I would give to the event is have a lot more seating for the talks and have the layout so people can get from one talk to the other easily. Queues for the food ere ridiculous. I wish there was some order to the queue or layout could have been better. The talks had areas which people could not due to safety reasons which is reasonable. When I tried to sit down, I was told to move which is fine but when someone comes and sit down they are allowed purely because the talk has started and the talk could not be disturbed as this was right by the stage. So essentially staff are picking and choosing who can sit down and who cannot. One of the talks I as really looking forward to was Trends, Tips and Creating a Scene Stealing Space Interiors in 2018. However about 20 minutes before the talk is due to start, the screen says it is cancelled. Nobody from Stylist came on stage to apologise or explain the reason for the late cancellation which I thought was quite rude to people who have been waiting and expecting to see this talk. It was one of few interior design talks.
So overall, lots of good things, lots of things to improve on for next year. Stylist probably will not even see this but one can try right? Anyway did you go? Did you see any of the talks? What did you learn what did you buy? Tell me all about it in the comments below! I want to hear everything. I could not see all the talk as some of them were on at the same time so had to make a choice.
